When should you NOT dermaplane? There are circumstances when dermaplaning is not suitable:
If you have a current acne breakout. A few pimples are not a problem as they can be worked around, however if large areas of your face are experiencing a breakout it is best to wait until your skin has improved before dermaplaning.
If you have extremely sensitive skin.
If you have milia bumps covering a large portion of your face. A milium cyst is small, white bump that typically appears on the nose, cheeks and under the eyes.
If you have inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea or eczema.
Those with thinning skin that’s prone to cuts and tear.
Avoid direct sunlight for 1 week prior to your appointment
Do not use any retinoid products for at least 1 week prior to your appointment
Do not use acne topical agents for at least 1 week prior to your appointment
Do not use Accutane for at least 1 week prior to your appointment
Do not have Botox or fillers before dermaplaning
Do not take antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications before dermaplaning as these can cause photosensitivity (extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and other light sources)
Avoid taking blood thinners
Do not conduct dermaplaning if your face has active acne
If you also have the following treatments, please wait the indicated time between that treatment and dermaplaning:
Your skin may be slightly red (erythema) or swollen (edema) or otherwise slightly irritated for 30-45 minutes. If the skin is really irritated, apply a soothing mask for 10 minutes.
You may experience mild soreness or a burning/tingling sensation for about 48 hours after the procedure.
Mild scabbing and/or peeling might occur. Do not pick or scratch your skin.
Do not take antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications for at least a week following your appointment. These can cause photosensitivity (extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and other light sources).
Some skin breakouts (pimples) may happen.
Do not use any retinoid products (e.g. Retina A), acne topical agents, or creams containing glycolic acid for at least 5 days before and after dermaplaning as they can irritate freshly exfoliated skin.
Do not use any harsh scrubs or soaps for a few days.
Avoid direct sunlight for 5 days before and 5 days after then wear a high-quality sunscreen of SPF 30+ when you go into the sun (we recommend SPF 50).
There is an increased risk of herpes simplex (cold sore) breakout if this is something you are already prone to, so it is advised to take antiviral medications prior to treatment.
Do not wear any makeup for at least 24 hours post treatment.
Avoid any other strong facial treatments for at least 2 weeks after your dermaplaning.
Try to avoid any contact with chlorine (swimming pools, Jacuzzi) for at least 3 days post treatment.
