Did you know, the esthetics industry in BC is unregulated?

That's right...you can go to any salon and spa in BC and be treated by an esthetician who has NO formal training.  Education is not required to perform waxing, lash lifts, lash extensions, manicures, chemical peels or operate a laser. How scary is that?! It's on the client to investigate and find out if the esthetician is qualified and/or has received formal training.

What can clients do to make sure they are being treated by a trained esthetician?
  • Before making an appointment, ask where your esthetician received their training, how many hours of training did they receive, how many years have they been in the industry, and don't be afraid to ask for certificates! Most estheticians will proudly display their certification in their treatment areas so that there is no cause for concern. If you don't see anything, ask!
  • Even if your esthetician is trained, for a service such as eyelash extensions make sure you do your research. Look for pictures online or on their Facebook page. Check out the reviews to see what you can expect in terms of quality of service. I have had several clients come to me needing their lashes fixed after botch jobs by "certified" lash techs - too much glue causing lashes to fall out, not separating lashes causing them to stick together, and so much more!

I was able to save this lady's remaining lashes, but you can see how many she has lost due to heavy lashes, applied with far too much glue, and not separated properly.

Certification is not mandatory to work as an esthetician so do your due diligence and your own research when choosing where to get your esthetics services - this is your body and you don't want to ruin it!

What is a lash lift? And how does it compare to lash extensions?

Some lashes are stubborn. They might point down. They might be flat, or they might go in all sorts of directions! If this sounds like you, a lash lift might just be the solution you’re looking for! But even women with regular lashes love lash lifts for the effect it can have on their face! A lash lift is like a perm for your lashes, and who doesn’t want bigger, curlier lashes?!

But aren't lash extensions better?
Well, lash extensions aren’t for everyone. If you don’t like the feel of extensions on your lashes, then a lash lift and tint might be the better option. If you react to the lash extension glue, then consider a lash lift. If you don’t like the idea of not being able to rub your eyes, a lash lift is probably better for you! Simply put, some people prefer to work with what they’ve got!

The lash lift is especially good because, if done properly, won’t cause any damage to your natural lashes (although lash extensions shouldn’t damage natural lashes, if the right size and weight are used, but you can never be 100% certain, especially if your lash tech isn’t experienced).

There is no preparation necessary for a lash lift, but if you want to get the most effective lash lift, consider using a lash serum to grow your lashes as much as possible beforehand. I love the Refectocil brand of lash serum.

Your lash lift technician will ask you several questions before getting started, and assuming all is well, will get you to lie down on the bed and get comfortable. The procedure takes about an hour so you want to make sure you’re hydrated and have used the bathroom prior! You can read all of the steps involved in the lash lift here.

What are the benefits of a lash lift?
There are many great features of the lash lift:
1. You can wear mascara!
Because it's just your natural lashes being curled and no other substance is being applied, you're free to use whatever eye makeup you wish. You just have to wait 24 hours. If you’re not a big mascara fan, get a tint with your lash lift for a more glamorous look, which is equally low maintenance. Adding a tint can really add extra depth and darkness. Just keep in mind the tint lasts about three weeks, so you might want a tint redo in between lash lifts.

2. Lash lifts are low maintenance.
While lash extensions require you to be extra careful doing almost anything, like showering, washing your face, sleeping etc, lash lifts require none of that. You wake up, apply mascara and you’re good to go.
The only thing you really need to do it condition your lashes every night to keep them conditioned and nourished. Any kind of facial oil works great.

3. You’ll get a lot of compliments.
People will be asking you what you did differently. A lash lift is such an easy, affordable, only hour-long service that will have a huge impact on your face. With bright, open eyes, everyone will be wondering what you did differently...and how they can get it done too :) Come see why women all over the world are obsessed with lash lifts! You’ll be hooked too :)

Lash lifts at Kelowna Esthetics Studio are $50, or $65 if combined with a tint. I am a trained lash-lift technician, having conducted training at The Esthetics Institute in Alberta. I use the B-Lash system that uses a combination of safe, FDA approved creams to achieve the lift.
